Fordite

Fordite

Detroit agate, and not a stone at all. Fordite is built from hundreds of layers of automotive paint that collected on the tracks and skids carrying car bodies through factory paint booths, hardened by repeated trips through the curing ovens.

Cut and polished, those layers surface as stripes, waves, rings, and swirls in black, white, silver, red, blue, green, yellow, orange, and purple. The collection includes Corvette Fordite from the Bowling Green plant. Modern painting technology barely produces it anymore.
